Dear Summer Institute Participants:
We are very pleased that you will be attending the 28th Annual Western Regional Summer Institute for Union Women, August 11-15, 2009, at the UCLA DeNeve Plaza. Please clear your calendars for the entire Institute. There are great workshops and activities planned, and your sisters count on your participation in all the events. Enclosed is lots of information to make your arrival and your stay easier. Workshop selections will be provided at registration.
Directions and Parking: Directions to UCLA and the conference site are posted on the SIUW09 web site. Please follow instructions provided to obtain your parking permits for the week. You will need to purchase permits for each day of your stay on campus.
Check-in: Check-in and registration will be on Tuesday, August 11, 3:00-5:00 p.m., in the Covel Commons courtyard. Late arrivals may check in at the Sproul Hall front desk for rooms and do conference registration in the evening at the opening plenary session. If you are arriving on Monday, August 10, or earlier, please check in at the front desk in Sproul Hall for rooms and register on Tuesday.
Meals and accommodations: Overnight residents will check in to their rooms at the Sproul Hall table in the Summer Institute registration area. You will then be given a swipe card for access to the dining halls. Commuters will receive individual meal tickets at registration.
Free Night: We will have a free night on Friday, August 14. Workshops end at 12:00 noon that day. We will participate in the Dream Act Teach-in and Press Conference from 2:00–3:00 p.m., and dinner will still be available in the dining hall. We hope you will take this opportunity to tour Los Angeles and visit local events. We’ve compiled a list of things happening that night that will be available in your registration packet. No formal transportation has been arranged, but we encourage our LA sisters and those driving to help coordinate group activities. There are also many restaurants and theatres within walking distance in Westwood, the UCLA neighborhood.
Smoke Free Policy: Smoking is prohibited in all UCLA buildings.
We are very excited about this year’s program, and we look forward to your arrival and your participation. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at (213) 480-4155 x212.
In solidarity,
Lanita Morris
