On June 10, 2006, five hundred people attended the third annual fund-raiser banquet for the UCLA Labor Center at the Center at Cathedral Plaza in downtown Los Angeles. The fund-raiser was held at a crucial time, during the final deliberations on the California state budget, which impacted the future of the UCLA and UC Berkeley Labor Centers. More than $100,000 was raised.

This year’s honorees were Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, L.A. County Federation of Labor Executive Secretary-Treasurer María Elena Durazo, AFTRA President John Connally, and SEIU Local 434B President Tyrone Freeman. Other speakers during the evening included Rev. James Lawson Jr., Senator Richard Alarcon, Senator Gilbert Cedillo, and Assemblymember Paul Koretz.

The spirited event also included a slide show highlighting major UCLA Labor Center projects during the past year. As in previous years, a special poster was commissioned for the evening and distributed to all of the participants. This year’s poster depicted the May Day march for Immigrant Rights, the largest immigrant rights demonstration in history, attended by more than one million people.
