The UCLA Labor Center held a luncheon to recognize the acheivements of and award scholarships to twelve UCLA undocumented students, on February 24, 2009. The scholarships are a joint project of the Liberty Hill Foundation and the UCLA student organization IDEAS (Improving Dreams, Equality, Access, and Success).
The Dream Fund scholarships were born out of the publication of UCLA's Underground Undergrads, a student publication detailing the experiences of undocumented students at UCLA. Many readers, including university staff and faculty, expressed a desire to help these outstanding students reach their dreams.
Selected scholars were presented with $500 merit-based scholarships to defray the cost of quarterly tuition. Students' majors ranged from law and public policy to math and chemistry.
