The Collective Bargaining Education Project is a national program based in Los Angeles. This innovative project was initiated by the UCLA Labor Center to strengthen labor education in the public schools. Every year since 1991, schools throughout Los Angeles have been participating in the annual Collective Bargaining Institute for High School students.
The Collective Bargaining Institute brings together 100 high school students from around the LA Unified School District to participate in a day of mock collective bargaining sessions.
Over 50 unions from around the county sponsor the students. Union negotiators volunteer to "coach" the sessions, advising the students through the simulation. Officials of the US Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service are on hand to facilitate the goal of reaching an agreement. The teachers who attend with the students spend the day in a training session.
This exciting program is now a national model for school districts across the country. Labor Center Director Kent Wong serves on a national committee along with representatives from the AFL-CIO, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the Industrial Relations Research Association. Valerie Ervin is the national coordinator based at the George Meany Center. Two high school teachers, Linda Tubach and Patty Litwin, spearheaded the Project, and now serve as consultants and trainers.
Coaches Needed for the Collective Bargaining Institute for L.A. Students
Sponsored by the UCLA Center for Labor Research and Education, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, Los Angeles Trade Technical College Labor Center, and United Teachers Los Angeles.
One hundred high school students from all over LA Unified School District will learn about the role of unions by participating in mock collective bargaining sessions. Students will be assisted by union negotiators, mediators from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, teachers, and labor educators.
Please help make this event a success by volunteering to coach a team of 4-6 students. As a coach, you will explain rules and format, help stimulate discussions among team members, and aid in the preparation of the bargaining process.
Please check your calendar and contact Linda Tubach if you are available. Your assistance is a valuable and necessary asset to the Institute.
