Rev. James Lawson

Rev. James Lawson is a nationally known leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He was instrumental in introducing the philosophy of nonviolence to the movement and was a close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He served as the director of Nonviolent Education for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and was a leader of the Nashville sit-in campaign and the Memphis sanitation workers’ strike. Rev. Lawson continues to play an important role in the struggle for social and economic justice today.

This course will examine the historic threads of nonviolence and their application to organizing in Los Angeles today. In addition to covering historic events, the course will also focus on Los Angeles as a center for significant labor and community organizing, from the Justice for Janitors campaign to the living wage movement.
