DREAM SUMMER 2018 APPLICANTS COMING SOON

In 2010, immigrant youth leaders were moved by the US Senate’s failure to pass the Federal DREAM Act to create a way of developing future leaders in the immigrant rights movement. The result was the inaugural Dream Summer program, a national Fellowship that:

  • Empowers immigrant youth to be the next generation of social justice leaders through leadership and professional development opportunities;
  • Creates safe and healing spaces for immigrant youth to connect with each other and explore their identities;
  • Promotes an intersectional, cross-racial, and multi-generational approach to social justice that addresses the needs of immigrant communities.

The Dream Summer program has provided over 600 fellowship opportunities to immigrant youth and allies throughout the nation. Past Dream Summer Fellows have engaged in social justice work and intersectional movement building by aligning the call for immigrant rights issues alongside the unique challenges of queer and transgender communities, Asian and Pacific Islander communities, Black immigrant communities, the ongoing mass incarceration and criminalization of people of color, and health care access for all.

Examples of our this work include the  Healthy California Project in 2013. Fellows who participated in this project promote the right to access health care, regardless of immigration status. For more information on this cohort visit Undocumented and Uninsured. In 2015, we oversaw the launch of our labor cohort, designed to highlight the importance of labor and immigrant experiences in the U.S. labor movement.

Participants are placed in social justice organizations for 10 weeks and work closely with their host organization to strengthen the inclusion of undocumented immigrant issues into the organization’s ongoing mission and vision. Dream Summer Fellows  receive a $5,000 fellowship for their participation in the program and gain access to our national alumni network of leaders.
